The expansion is part of the state government's plans to extend the facility by 320 beds to meet rising demand and bolster custodial capacity. The project, part of the Long Term Custodial Infrastructure Plan, includes a two-unit expansion bringing total capacity to 1,920 inmates.

This expansion focused on modernising infrastructure, including upgrades to utility services and support buildings to manage the increased inmate population. The project aims to enhance safety, reduce reoffending, and strengthen security within the facility.
